Photography has long been woven into my life through my dad, who documented our days in near-constant motion from behind the lens. He armed my siblings and me with cameras of our own at a young age, encouraging us to photograph everything and delete nothing. Though my use of cameras faded as technology evolved, his remained close at hand – evident in the countless rolls of film, memory cards and albums that filled our home.

Two months before he passed away, he surprised me with a Sony a7C (the “junior” to his longtime a7), along with his old gear. When I asked why, he answered in his usual measured way, that he had always hoped his kids would carry on his passion after he was gone.   

It was a few months before I picked up the camera, using it at first as a way to process my grief. I started visiting local dog parks and asking strangers if I could photograph their pups. It gave me something to look forward to and helped me feel connected – not only to my father's memory, but to the world around me.

What started as a personal journey to heal became a way to celebrate the bond between pets and their people. From playful park shoots and milestone portraits to seasonal pop-ups, volunteer work with rescues and end-of-life sessions, I have been privileged to capture fleeting moments for families to look back on.

Nala Shots is a tribute to my father’s legacy and my way of giving back to the community that lifted me when I needed it. My mission is to highlight the love and joy pets bring into our lives, through authentic, accessible photography. A simple way to preserve what matters.
